from "Folkedragter i Danmark" by Ellen Andersen, 1952
From the late 1700s onward, navy blue became the color-of-choice for men's festive clothing. In contrast, workwear consisted of uncolored cotton or wool, which was somewhat gray in color.

The Odense County costume, above, has the following elements:
a. the cut is influenced by late Empire fashion.
b. the jacket and trousers are made of wadmal, a coarse, dense woolen fabric.
c. the vest is made from worsted wool yarn.
d. the tall hat first appeared in the early 1800s as an element of men's urban clothing. By 1830, it was popular with farmers.
