Sønderjylland Region, Jylland

Sønderjylland 1660-1921
Sønderjylland (Southern Jutland)
Sønderjylland is the new name that was given to Northern Schleswig after the Danes lost Southern Scheswig in 1864.
Two wars were fought in the 1800s over Northern Schleswig (Sønderjylland). The first was won by Denmark, the second by the Prussians in 1864, ultimately dividing the Duchy of Schleswig between the two countries until this very day. Further, Denmark lost the Duchies of Holstein and Saxe-Lauenburg in their entirety in 1864.
An additional loss for Denmark, beyond the land itself, is no longer being able to claim the beautiful costumes of South Schleswig (Ostenfeld, Dannevirke, Amrom, Føhr), Holstein and Saxe-Lauenburg as its own.
Regarding the folk costume of Sønderjylland, the region's proximity to mainland Europe caused it to be exposed to more modern styles of dress. Thus, its traditional folk costume reportedly fell out of use earlier than the folk costumes of other Danish regions. That is why the Sønderjylland folk costume that has been revived for use by folk dance clubs is from the 1700s and not the 1800s. For the most part, the region's folk costume had vanished by the 1800s.

A real rarity in Danish folk costumes - the color yellow! Only Læsø Island's costume and the Fanø men's costume has anything comparable in hue.
